What is this competition?

The Trance is Gay Competition is a fun project for the biggest part, where all participants have to do their best trying to produce the gayest song ever. All contributions should be created and distributed in the .rns module file format, so that anyone using Renoise can access them to view, play, edit and learn from it. Or if you're unfamiliar with Renoise or trackers in general, the files on this site serve as excellent examples.

This competition is a spin-off from a more than two year old discussion thread about how to get that professional level 'phat' trance sound. This thread had managed to surface from the depths of the forum as if no time had passed since the last post and as if that alone wasn't hilarious enough, its subject couldn't have had a better timing.

If you are familiar with internet cult and hypes, you could know that during a forum's life comes a time that one or a few people start using the word gay where others normally use to call things cheesy, stupid and generally anything not cool. After a good bit of protesting either the forum calms down, or the use of the word contaminates the regular visitors, which indeed happened in this case.

It didn't take long before melodic trance was mentioned, and being all hyped up some finally dared to come out of the closet and revealed their past 'experience' with this style, which is certainly not the manliest around. The most prominent person when it comes to great bad ideas is P.T, who had earlier managed to turn a lame thread into a succesful project once again came up with a wicked concept: to "compose the gayest melodic trance melody on earth!". The next step was opening a new topic and changing the objective into creating the cutest, fluffiest, tuffiest and most gayish full length trance module.

What is gay trance?

Gay trance is not an official subgenre, nor are there any exact specifications. In fact, everyone has his interpretation. There are some characteristics that a song in this genre may contain, but not necesserily.

Here is a list of characteristics I personally see fit in gay trance.

• Supersaw lead melodies, lots of chorus and reverb.
• A soft kick and a slow, drifting tempo. Not too funky, keep it rather dreamy.
• The intro fades in, we get a rhythm with a variation on the main theme, after which we get a drop. The song then builds up for about three minutes like in epic trance, followed by a very moderate climax. The rest of the song can either be resumed with alternating dreamy themes with very cheesy ones.
• Not having too uncommon or complex chords.
• The mood progresses from overly dramatic to irrationally exhuberant.
• Smooth, sparkling bubbly sounds instead of harsh stabs and aggressive arps.
• Cheesiness!
